A chemical peel is a procedure done to rejuvenate the skin on the face, neck or hands. It can be used to treat wrinkles, some scars, and discolorations like age spots. It works by exfoliating the outermost layers of dead skin. Chemical peels are outpatient procedures that can be done at a doctor’s office.
What does a chemical peel involve?
The dermatologist will clean the patient’s skin thoroughly and then apply a peel on the treatment site for a given length of time. Afterwards, a cold compress or cream can be applied to the treatment area.
What chemicals are used in a chemical peel?
There are three main types of chemical peels, and different chemicals are used with each one. Alpha hydroxy acids may be used in light chemical peels, which are the mildest type. Temporary side effects may include redness.
Trichloroacetic acid may be used for a medium peel. The new skin layer could take a few days to develop, and total recovery time from the treatment may vary. Medium peels are the most helpful for people with dark skin.
Phenol acid is the chemical that may be used for a deep peel, the strongest chemical peel. It can treat deep wrinkles and may require anesthesia. A deep peel takes one or two hours to administer, and it requires the longest recovery period. The new skin layer takes several days to appear, and total recovery time may vary.

Who is a good candidate for a chemical peel?
Healthy people with fair skin are the best candidates for chemical peels. People with a history of keloids or other large and unusual scars may not be good candidates for chemical peels.
Also, individuals with skin infections in the treatment area should wait until the infection has cleared up before getting a chemical peel.
Anybody planning to undergo a chemical peel will need to follow the doctor’s instructions regarding aftercare. The new skin may be sensitive to sunlight, and the patient will have to stay out of the sun and use sunscreen for a given amount of time after the chemical peel.
