Botox or Fillers – Which is Right for Me?

botox and fillers

Why shouldn’t your face look as young as you feel? Modern procedures make it simple to look more youthful with surgery. They are relatively painless and require no downtime from work or school. Skin wrinkles are created as a result of aging, sun exposure, smoking, normal facial positions, and numerous other sources. Everyone will get wrinkles sooner or later, but there are quick solutions that reduce or eliminate facial wrinkles around your eyes and mouth.

The two most common injectable treatments are Botox and dermal fillers. At Rejuvenate MedSpa we offer both types of injectable treatments to help combat the signs of aging – however they are not the same. Schedule your appointment with Rejuvenate MedSpa today, and our medical staff can help you figure out which treatment option is right for you.

Botox

The major difference between Botox and other injectable fillers is that Botox reduces lines and wrinkles by relaxing muscle movement. The procedure involves using a very thin needle to inject tiny amounts of Botox at different wrinkle, or line, sites. This treatment is particularly successful for wrinkles that are caused by repetitive motion from facial expressions, such as:

Results are not visible immediately, but most individuals will see results within one or two days. With Botox, wrinkles are usually decreased by 80 percent. Botox results usually last up to six months, but as muscles regain their motion, lines and wrinkles begin to come back, and need to be re-treated. Often patients find that their wrinkles are not as deep, as the muscles have been trained to relax.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are injected into the skin to soften wrinkles from aging or sun exposure, by literally filling in hollows and grooves that cause wrinkles. They are often used to fill in cheeks, minimize mouth wrinkles, and reduce the hollows under the eyes. The majority of wrinkle fillers are hyaluronic acid based, a natural substance that fuels hydration and volume. They are used to significantly reduce, or eliminate:

Dermal filler procedures are very simple. A few minutes before the process, the facial area to be treated is numbed with anesthetic cream or a dental block. A very small needle is used to inject the filler under the skin, with a series of injections to treatment sites. The entire procedure takes approximately 30 minutes. The results are immediate, and last from four months to a year.

Combination of Botox and Fillers

Botox relaxes muscles, but there are often lines or wrinkles at rest. Fillers may fill in frown lines, but without Botox, continued active frowning will result in the filler not being effective for very long. Many studies are showing that, used together, Botox and fillers, give more optimal results. Fillers eventually wear down and are absorbed by the body. Animated, active facial motions break down fillers faster.

When Botox is used to relax the muscles, followed by filler, the combination lasts longer and looks better. The combination is particularly effective around the mouth, where typically, fillers wear down the fastest. The combination procedure is simple, and fast, and can seriously “take years off your face.”  The hardest decision about wrinkle reduction could be just choosing which procedure is best for you.
