In the past, liposuction involved the use of a tiny hollow tube to get rid of unwanted fat. Tumescent fluid was used for reducing bleeding and pain during the treatment. Laser-assisted liposuction, or Smartlipo, uses a laser fiber that is placed under the patient’s skin to melt away the excess fat instead of immediately using a tube (cannula) for fat removal. When the fat has liquefied, the tube (cannula) is used to remove it.
Why is Laser-Assisted Liposuction Performed?
The main objective of laser assisted liposuction is to reshape areas of a patient’s body and not to shed excess weight. Liposuction is normally used to treat areas that have failed to respond to exercise and diet. These areas are mostly around the back and waist on men and on the hips and outer thighs on women. Other areas that are treated include the neck, abdomen, buttocks, back, upper arms and legs.

In traditional liposuction procedures, a small tube is used to remove the fat. With laser-assisted liposuction, a laser is used to melt the fat and then the liquefied fat is removed using a tube (suction cannula).
Laser liposuction is gentler than traditional liposuction because you do not use a lot of force when moving through the tissues. Furthermore, the laser’s heat stimulates the patient’s skin to form new collagen which results in the smoothing and tightening of the skin. With traditional liposuction, collagen is not stimulated and therefore no heat is generated.
