How Does a Chemical Peel Work?

There are many tools designed to rejuvenate the skin of the face, but few are as versatile as a chemical peel. These treatments can be as gentle or as strong as you desire due to the unique way they work. Their results can vary just as much as the strength of different peels.

This quality is something that makes chemical peels somewhat of a mystery to patients. Due to the varying effects different peels can have, their results may differ. The gentlest of chemical peels will treat dull skin while the strongest can help to minimize the appearance of deep wrinkles. It is important to know what this treatment is to better understand how it works.

What is a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels utilize a controlled destruction of skin cells to remove undesirable traits. This allows the body to begin replacing these cells once they have been affected, which in turn is what gives chemical peels their great ability to rejuvenate the face. This controlled destruction stems from the introduction of one or more different solutions to the face. These solutions can vary in strength, which in turn allows for chemical peels to affect different depths of the skin.

Salicylic acid is one of the gentler solutions that may be used. This solution is generally used in the lightest of chemical peels, as it is just enough to remove dead skin cells while opening some clogged pores. It has the side effect of making pores smaller, which in turn can make your face look younger.

Glycolic acid represents one of the stronger solutions used in chemical peels. This solution is designed to penetrate deep enough into the skin that it can affect undesirable collagen tissue. This results in the regrowth of the collagen, which in turn helps to give the face a tighter appearance.

What is a Chemical Peel Like?

Chemical peels are applied during a visit to our office. The peel is applied to your face containing one or more solutions. The peel is then allowed a few minutes to half an hour to work. This helps it affect skin cells while opening the pores that the face uses to keep your skin looking healthy and young.

Once the peel has been removed, your face will be cleaned to remove any excess solution and some of the dead skin cells. Depending upon the strength of the peel, some flaking may occur after treatment. This should subside shortly as new cells replace the old ones. Stronger peels will require more time to heal and a longer period to show improvements.
