What Is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is a treatment that uses pulses of laser light to remove hair. It works by targeting the hair follicle at the root. Laser hair removal has been FDA approved since 1998. This treatment is a great alternative to shaving, waxing and plucking, and can offer a more permanent solution to unwanted hair.
Why Do People Get Laser Hair Removal?
Plucking, shaving and waxing are some of the methods that people often use to remove unwanted hair. However, all of these methods are temporary. Because laser hair removal targets the hair follicle, it permanently reduces hair growth. The arms, legs, face, underarms, and bikini line are examples of some of the areas of the body that can be treated with laser hair removal.
How Many Laser Hair Removal Treatments Do I Need?
The number of laser hair removal treatments needed can vary from patient to patient. However, most people are able to get permanent hair loss after just three to seven treatments. Smaller areas of the body will require fewer treatments. We’ll create a treatment schedule that is tailored to your needs, depending on the size of the treated area and the thickness of the hair.
Why Do I Need More Than One Treatment?
Hair grows in phases. The laser will only work if the hair is in the active growing phase. That is why several sessions are needed before one gets permanent hair loss.
Side Effects of Laser Hair Removal
It is normal to experience some side effects after laser hair removal. Swelling, bruising, and redness are side effects that people commonly experience after laser hair removal. These side effects typically only last two or three days. Any discomfort that one experiences during this treatment can be reduced with numbing cream.
Preparing For Laser Hair Removal
If you will be getting laser hair removal, then you will need to avoid plucking, waxing and using hair removal creams for six weeks before your treatment. It is also a good idea to limit your sun exposure for a few weeks before your procedure. Sun exposure can reduce the effectiveness of laser hair removal.
Laser Hair Removal Recovery
The skin will appear sunburnt for one or two days after your procedure. If this is bothersome, then you can use a cool compress. Makeup can be worn the following day. You will need to protect your skin by wearing sunscreen after your procedure. The next laser hair removal treatment can be performed within four to six weeks.
