Micro-needling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a treatment that encourages new collagen and elastin production. It is unlike other facial resurfacing techniques in that it doesn’t involve the removal of epidermis.
At Rejuvenate Med Spa in Oak Brook, we offer complete consultation and micro-needling services for interested clients, and we use the popular SkinPen® to perform this cosmetic procedure.
About Collagen Induction Therapy
As we age, collagen production tends to decrease. This causes the skin to become less supple, and the upper layers of skin become thinner and more brittle. Simply using a moisturizing cream is usually not enough to combat this aging process.
Skin resurfacing techniques stimulate new skin growth, but the commonly used peel treatments and abrasive skin removal procedures often result in discoloration.
On the other hand, micro-needling causes tiny wounds that the body heals through the transport of nutrients from the blood. This also triggers collagen production.
Who is a Candidate for Micro-Needling?
Mature adults who have brittle skin that shows fine line wrinkles can benefit from this procedure. Those individuals who have superficial dark spots such as injury scars may also find this treatment beneficial.
Stretch marks and enlarged pores are common signs of aging. Micro-needling helps stimulate newer, healthier skin that is far less prone to the advancement of set, permanent wrinkles.
Enlarged pores occur when the skin is no longer supple. Generating new skin growth is perhaps the best way to reduce the size of open pores.
How the Procedure Works
The SkinPen® is a wand-shaped instrument that has a set of needles at the tip. Depending on the thickness of the skin to be treated, the needle control is adjusted to allow just the right amount of penetration.
The pen is placed on the skin surface and the needles are extended. The holes will not form scars. Instead, the channel wounds soon become filled with lymphatic fluid.
This keeps infections from occurring. Each channel wound is surrounded by healthy tissue because the individual needles are separated by a few millimeters.
The wand can treat an area about the size of a nickel with a single application. The treatment time may vary depending on each individual case.
